  1. Here's a method I've used in the past to get chord progressions to shape to fit the song.
Write out the chords to either songs you haven't heard, or have someone else write out the chords to songs without telling you which songs they are from. No timing or other information at all, for instance, something like – E,G,E,D,A,B,E,G,A,B,E,G,E
    G,A,G,A,E,D,B,E,G
    E,B,E,G,A,E
    E,G,E,D,A,B,E,G,A,B,E,G,E
(I just made that up, but hey, it might fit some lyrics laying around!)
You'll know that the chord progression worked in another song, the chords will go together, you don't have to worry that you've used a chord that doesn't fit, as can be a roadblock when you're new to music.
You're not going to rip off someone's song, it's pretty unlikely that what you come up with will sound anything like the source song, you won't have any clues as to timing or the style of music, so you make it your own.
This only works if you have no clue as to which song or style of music the progression came from, or if it's a song you've never heard.
For instance, somehow I had a Moody Blues song book when I was 16, I'd never heard of any of the song titles, no idea how the songs go at all, so I just wrote the chords out, and chose from those chords for my own songs. It just got me away from standard 12 bar or turnaround patterns from the guitar book, and made choosing chords to fit my lyrics easier.
