http://www.vladtv.com -Rapper R.A. The Rugged Man sat down with VladTV exclusively to speak about the state of hip-hop and some of the major differences between mainstream hip-hop music. The New York native disagrees with the majority of people who find today’s rap music less than sub-par. He says there’s plenty of disappointing acts out, but each era comes with artists who aren’t to an individual’s liking. He does point out that commercial rappers aren’t making impactful music.

He gives rappers like J. Cole props for his lyrical ability, but says that Kendrick Lamar isn’t at the top of his list. R.A. believes underground artists like King Los have presented the game with better lyrical flows.

Rugged Man points out that many record labels want to push out hip-hop music but only to their liking. He makes Pitbull’s smash hit, “Timber” featuring Kesha as an example.

  1. I think the reason I have become a R.A fan is because I am also a big DOOM fan and I think that there both very similar
1.Both had albums that were dropped (black bastards and American lowlife)
    2. Both came back and came out with amazing albums
    3. Both were around in hip hops golden age (R.A started getting traction in 88-90) DOOM and his bro Subroc we’re getting traction around the same time.
    4. Both got dropped by there labels and became broke for a period of time.
    5.

  2. Niggas hatin on Kendrick cause he has mainstream success but is a beast of a rapper. Most of these mfs in the comments probably ain even heard a album by Kendrick or couldn't comprehend the point of his music before saying who and who isn't better than him smh.

  3. And so what RA The Rugged Man doesn't think Kendrick Lamar is a top five lyricist? Does that mean that Kendrick is gonna seize being successful? Is it gonna change your opinion of Kendrick? Obviously not. News flash, sometimes people have an opinion that differs from yours. Hip Hop has always been incredibly cerebral and outreaching, and the artist in the mainstream today are all but a small representation of hip hop as a whole. Fact of the matter is, there's many measures of talent to the point it'd be exhausting sitting here and dissecting an artist and comparing different data points and why so/so is better from it. To you, he's just a random guy that's entitled to his opinion. If you're getting butt hurt over it, it's probably because you're sensitive.

  4. Sit back and laugh about people arguing who's the best and which rapper beats that rapper, when it's always been subjective and heavily opiniated. At the end of the day, everyone has their own tastes, and the masses – as well as the general consensus – will always outweigh everything else, regardless of if it's objectively right or not. That's history. A moment in time changes everything, and will continue to change everything, which means this argument is completely meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

  5. Just on the Kendrick point – dude was respected before interscope backed him, not to mention.. he has that engine NOW so he’s lyrical in a commercial market, but not in general ? That doesn’t make sense, I’m just me so my opinion isn’t gonna matter here obviously ? but if your lyrical, you’re lyrical…. don’t matter the market. Don’t not like someone because they’re “mainstream”. He’s a real lyricist, just because you have big backing doesn’t mean you’re not a “real lyricist”

  6. This guy is good, but the fact that RA says he's better than kendrick is laughable. My father has been listening to hip since its inception and was heavy into underground artists most people have never heard of, and my dad puts kendrick in his top 3. Kendrick has better cadences, and word play than most rappers in any Era.
