  1. this is so right that you can just try to remeber, instantly, the name of someone who won all of these "reality shows" or whatever they call it, and it is really famous or admired…. probably you won't get any name instantly… I am brazilian and there is a bunch of shows like that down here and guess what? nobody gives a sh** for them….

  2. 41 neverrr would have guessed that. Anyway, love your channel. you are a great teacher with a humble attitude. I've been recording longer than you have been alive and I still learn stuff from you all the time. what you said here is so true. ive noticed that when it stops being fun and inspiring it stops being art. For some the goal is to be famous but art drives the artist regardless of external adulation. Thanks for you channel and humble spirit. ah ya. The music you and the group you belong to make is so awesome. so different from the main stream stuff. You guys seem to be following something within instead of everyone else. that's how art happens. Blessings.

  3. I completely agree with you. I've done the competition thing as well, but have always felt that a musicians job (or part of it anyway) is to bring people together and competitions don't do that. Thank you for this video.

  4. Hey man I totally agree with you and your YouTube channel has helped me in my efforts to make music! Can you do another video on how to record a drum kit? I am totally lost on how to EQ my bass drum and what compression plug in to use. Keep doing what you are doing. Oh and I am 49 and just recently picked up the guitar to learn and yeah I kinda suck but I'm happy!

  5. 'THIS IS NOT A COMPETITION"……excellent point, lewin. it's about making music and loving it. but i do think places like American Idol, Voice and xFactor etc….are great for some people. If you don't live in major market and you get on one of those shows it can be life changing as I'm certain most of those winners of those shows will tell you. In one live tv performance you get "seen" by millions of people. That's alot of chances to get your self exposure for your singing, dancing, writing or whatever….I don't think it's the only way BUT it is ONE way….thanks for your videos, i love 'em….john

  6. You are right on the money! It is about working hard and writing constantly. I write and release 3 songs a week on a schedule and being successful is about being like you said a "brotherhood". That is how I got 125,000 views on YouTube.

  7. This video was really helpful for me! I just started studying music and when I compared myself to the other students I felt really bad, because they seem to be so much better than me. Now I don't feel so disheartened any more but exited to make music with them!

  8. I took part in a competition run by a regional newspaper just for fun … and it was! As I do medieval music I knew, that that was not the thing to win, but I was in this newspaper when I qualified for this competition and I even got more space than the winner in the newspaper after I was out in round two. So for promotional purposes it was great and I made friends with musicians from various genres.
Generally I think you are absolutely right, but it is still a nice opportunity to have fun if you are not intending to win.

  9. Would you consider the competition a songwriting duo(such as John Lennon and Paul McCartney while they were in the Beatles) had/has with each other to one up the other would be healthy? Since they have the brotherhood, but also have the competition help to drive them to improve?

  10. Your opinion make sense, but Dave's quote is… overdue? I mean, nowadays you actually CAN'T become "new Nirvana" without computer and internet. New time – new rules. Some things became easier (I mean recording and stuff), and some – harder.
