What is more important, a great melody or a great lyric? Well, believe it or not, you’re going to get a different answer depending upon who you ask. Even the pros can’t agree on this subject. Think I’m kidding? The following true stories will prove my point.

I was a big fan of songwriting conventions and workshops. I met some of the biggest names in the business. Heck, it cost me enough to do it. Anyway, I specifically remember a few of the many things I heard over the years in regard to this very question. Here is the answer as one A&R person put it to me.

He said that the key thing was a good hook. It had to be something that was memorable and singable. It had to be killer. If the song didn’t have the killer hook, it wasn’t going to be a hit. He was of course referring to the music of the song, more specifically, the chorus. He was emphatic about this. As a matter of fact, when I sent him one of my best tunes, at the time, he wrote to me just one sentence in response…”I don’t hear that killer hook.” He never said a word about the words.

Then there was the one music publisher I communicated with. He lived in Nashville and was also a pretty big name in the business. His words to me, and I’m paraphrasing here, were “You have to say the same things that everybody else has been saying in song throughout time, but say them in a different way.” He did nothing but talk about the lyrics of a song. It was like the music didn’t even matter. His opinion was that anybody could write a decent tune but it was the story that grabbed a listener’s attention.

Personally, I feel that they are both just as important. If you take any great hook, any great melody, and sing “la, la, la de, da” to it, I don’t think it’s going to sound quite as good. Conversely, a great lyric set to a dull tune isn’t going to do it for me either. To me, it’s a marriage between lyric and melody. I don’t feel one is more important than another. But like I said, nobody can really agree on this…not even the pros.

So when you set out to write your next tune, my advice is to work as hard on the lyrics as you would on the music. Ultimately, you will end up writing the best song possible.

To YOUR Songwriting Success,

Steven Wagenheim

[ad_2]

Source by Steven Wagenheim

[ad_1] It is a question that has been plaguing aspiring songwriters for years.
