    The Logic book I’ve been yearning for!, April 18, 2012

    Finally, I’ve found a book on Logic that is …. well, logical! It fills in the missing links in the processes that were breaking my flow of creativity before. There is so much you can do with any musical idea during the creative process, and the last thing you want is to get hung up with a technical hurdle that interrupts you and demolishes your idea. I used to skip from point A to point C in order to make sure I at least got the idea down, but point B was usually the ingredient that could have potentially made a good idea great. In other words, this book helps you access deeper levels of technical music making in a creative, and most importantly fun way. It will bring out new ideas that you might not have dreamed of before. “Wow, I can do that, and it’s that easy?” These are the thoughts and words I used during the first few musical examples I tried. It is also a book that doesn’t have to be read from the beginning to the end. You can open it up to any page and find a really cool idea or something new to try. I had a feeling this would be the experience I would encounter when first learning about this book. It is written by someone who not only knows the program and it’s history, but by someone who has been using Logic to create and collaborate with top level musicians, world-wide for many years. In a day and age where most technical help books are sterile and merely just extensions of manufacture’s manuals, it’s a welcomed surprise to find a technical book that is both fun to read and musically inspiring. You will stop what you are doing and boot up Logic as quickly as you can once you read the first few pages! Thanks for writing this book Dot!

    Dot Bustelo’s “The Power in Logic Pro” is loaded with useful, real world tips that will enable the Logic user to be more efficient while enjoying the music-making process. The author’s credibility and connection with Logic are reflected in her historical anecdotes that are sprinkled throughout the book. Short videos on the included DVD clearly demonstrate many of the techniques presented in the book.

    The first chapter addresses ways to customize the installation process, and setting up audio and MIDI hardware with the Audio MIDI utility. Power Tips include: saving projects the correct way; pre-fader metering; auditioning SI channel strip settings on audio tracks; protecting key commands; EXS24 samples in the project folder; and sample location; Quick Tips include: separating MIDI drum sounds from a region and Capture As Recording;

    The Navigating and Editing chapter provides extensive coverage of the amazing Marquee tool. Mastering this powerful tool will in and of itself dramatically improve editing efficiency and creativity! Zooming, navigating by markers, track importing, editing preferences, and edit grid settings are also presented in a way to help the reader put them to use right away.

    Software Instruments are introduced with useful tips on navigating through the library; backing up channel strip settings for the mobile musician; creating instruments; LFO tricks, and programming Ultrabeat,

    The Apple Loops chapter addresses removing unwanted elements from drum loops; changing the SI that plays the green loop (as a means of generating fresh sounds); and making your own loops.

    Content presentation intensifies in the Remixing and Making Beats chapter. Detailed information is provided on: Adjusting Logic’s tempo to the beat; time-stretching audio to Logic’s tempo; track import and export; Flex Audio; drum replacement; groove templates; speed fades; making a sampler instrument from a drum loop; and humanizing drum beats.

    Good Housekeeping addresses managing projects; bouncing, project templates; patch names for analog hardware; backing up presets and settings; and Notes.

    Trouble shooting covers how to trash preferences; setting I/O buffer size; dealing with 3rd party plug-in issues and file corruption.

    Having consumed much in the way of print and video tutorials on Logic, I’ve learned many new useful tips and revisited previously learned information from a fresh perspective in this book. It is not as comprehensive as the Apple Pro books, but is perfectly narrow in focus for the intended audience in the book’s subtitle.
