About Spectre Sound Studios:
I’m Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I’ve learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There’s reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We’ve covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you’ve wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!

I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer’s Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.

Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

  1. I was born literally 2 months after Kurt Cobain's passing. I've know who Nirvana was since my upbringing and I was raised on their music, as well as STP, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden, and to this day I wouldn't necessarily that any of these Grunge band killed rock music in general.

  2. I like it when bands can produce 3-4 minutes catchy songs as well as 7-12 minute exploration or ballad or epic or whatever style songs. I think the key is variety because different song structures offer bands (and their audience) different looks at their style.

  3. Type O Negative were the masters of the long song….the tempo is so slow, with great lyrics, makes you not realize that you have been listening to the song for over 10 minutes and in no hurry for it to end.

  4. 0:52 to be fair, there are bands that are still writing songs like that. The whole "Pizza Thrash" term (i'm not a huge fan of the term myself) is basically describing bands that are singing about partying, Thrashing, and stuff like that. Municipal Waste's "The Art of Partying" is offcourse an obvious example.

  5. Glenn, for us over 50 guys, warmup and stretching are useful, even if you're not strenuously active. (And even more if you are!) Kudos for getting a grip on your health! "If I'd known I was gonna live this long,…." ?

  6. My fave long songs are on The Song Remains The Same. Mostly shorter (or separate) songs that built out/merged into masterpieces. Though ironically, the most famous one is the one that started out intentionally long!

  7. I wonder how long the modern structure of a song has been around. You know: first part, chorus, second part, chorus, guitar solo, chorus, etc…Close to 100 years? Eventually things are going to change. Not a bad thing, I like when musicians try new things out as long as they still know what also brings in the audience to hear their stuff.

  8. Why would metal music not suffer from the same problems other genres suffer from? I listen to only a few metal bands and certainly wouldn't describe myself as a metal fan. But all the problems you described are true for other genres as well. There are similar problems in the genres I like and play (punk, hardcore, post-rock). Boredom has taken over.

  9. Doing a one-record mixing session can become a bit of a pain I've found. When I did a metal EP, I'd save all the track-settings/plugins as presets in Reaper, and then load them up in the other songs. Best of both worlds. // Sonic Peak Studio
