Canibus was most remembered for his battle style rhymes and his classic diss track toward LL cool J that many claim to be a top 5 diss track of all time. This was early in Canibus’s mainstream career and led to great expectations for the MC, as many also thought his career would end with him being one of the best rappers of all time. At least from the east coast. In the 90s, hip hop music was a lot more hardcore as they say, and almost every rapper seemed to benefit from looking, acting and writing rhymes that were aggressive and gave off the impressions they were the toughest of the bunch. Canibus fit right into this mold. Canibus’s style was a hard as they came on tracks with his usual lines about defeating other rappers on wax and them not being as skilled as him, so they shouldn’t bother to compete. He also had songs like “I honor you”, that touched on broken trust in relationships and the importance of choosing the right one. Or tracks like “Negronometry” that bounced around many topics that made you think about the state of the world at the time. But it was also tracks like this that made some think his subject weren’t well thought out and by the end of the song you leave feeling like that was a good idea, but what is he talking about. Subject matter aside, there’s no doubt in his prime, canibus was lyrically and skill wise one of the dopest rappers of his generation. He had a tall ceiling and high expectations in the era of the “hard core” artist, but most feel as though he dropped the ball in a few places and fell well short of those expectations. Here are 3 reasons why. Why wasn’t CANIBUS A Top 5 Lyricist Of All Time? What Happened? Stunted Growth Music

  1. Everybody keeps capping on Canibus for pulling out a notebook.

Diz actually pre wrote and prepared for this battle and memorized his words. They were dope, no lie. He won.

But for every time I’ve seen Canibus pull out a notebook I’ve still never seen Dizaster pull out a listenable track.

  2. Boy I was fw Canibus and wondered what happened to em. Then I saw the infamous notebook at a freestyle battle and was like damn we might never see CAN-I-BUS again ??????????

  3. I was immediately impressed with Canibus, his lyrical prowess was untouchable until I heard K Rino, his first album wasn’t too bad, but he should have went a different style of production, his beef with Eminem didn’t help his career either,he should have came correct, his song “2nd Round Knockout “was dope but he didn’t have a good follow up single from that album,I liked his second album 2000 B.C., I liked a couple of his tracks,he shouldn’t have showed up to battle with Dizaster,he was clearly unprepared, overall he still got,but when I heard the song “Art of Yo” K Rino smoked him

  4. That music when he was reading rhymes from his notebook! ???
I've had the pleasure of meeting the guy and his attitude was not pleasant to say the least. I always thought he was dope though with his lyrical word play.

  5. As if losing this battle was not catastrophic enough, to make matters worse, it was against Dizaster – the most unsympathetic, most obnoxious, corniest battle rapper in human history.
