Ahya Simone is a Detroit-based harpist, singer, performance artist, and filmmaker. She has performed extensively in Detroit, nationally and internationally and her versatile approach to harp and vocals ranges from classical, experimental, electronic, R&B, and soul.

FRED (Facing Race, Elevating Democracy) Talks is part of Race Forward’s Mass Freedom project. Mass Freedom seeks to bridge movements to end systems of mass criminalization by 1) elevating the experiences of those who have been most directly affected by these systems, and by 2) empowering communities of color to unite amidst a political landscape that grows more threatening with each day.

  1. It doesn’t look like you are looking at the music- did you work on memorizing this? Or did you learn Suzuki method? I’ve heard Salzado is similar to Suzuki. I would be interested in knowing how you learned to play harp. I think there are some good things about Suzuki method for learning instruments but some big downfalls too
