Hours after this performance, Olney, 71, passed away during a show at the festival.

Performing since the early 1970s, he was known as the “founding father of Americana.” He and his music will be greatly missed.

  1. This is so good. I like the way he calls his latest album a CD. Being a teenager in the '90s, it makes perfect sense to me.
    I absolutely love his songs, and this is one of my favorite singer-songwriter performances I've seen.

  2. I only became aware of David Olney during the last couple of years, but he was a great singer/songwriter in the Townes/Steve Earle/John Prine/Steve Goodman tradition. I think my favorites of his songs are "1917" and "Deeper Well." First heard them sung by Emmylou Harris, together with Linda Ronstadt on the first haunting tune. RIP, David.
