The black church is a musical bootcamp. Beyonce, Aretha Franklin, Anderson .Paak all found their start singing in the church. LA and Nahre travel to Chicago, the birthplace of gospel music. There they meet gospel artist, Donald Lawrence and LA introduces Nahre to drum shed culture at a shed session on the south side.

Later LA travels to Orlando to meet singer Tye Tribbett at his church. They talk about the shared exchange between secular and non secular music.

  1. This is the biggest episode we've done all year. LA pitched the idea when Sound Field started a year ago, and for the last 7 months we've been putting this episode together. Filmed in 3 cities with over 8 hours of footage. I can't wait to share this one with y'all and introduce you to the talented musicians of the black gospel church.

  2. This small community in the us brought to the planet a wealth of musicality from another dimension and it seems to be passed on from generation to generation especially their jazz music shows a form of intelegence and art at the same time.a salute to african americans ??

  3. Just to clear things up as a former christian. Those pastors or religious sects saying that it's the devil's music was mostly because it wasn't 'biblically accurate' and it's a thing in christianity (mostly those who are strict christians and churches) that they would not patronize or associate anything with the lord if it's not biblically sound or aligns with their doctrine, biblically it's a sin, and it's called heresy and could also be considered blasphemy. Mr. Dorsey was just doing his own thing, and as a believer it is valid because it's just 'praise and worship' (which is ok bcs it's mostly their personal testimony of the lord) accompanied with music, and he was right for birthing gospel music, it is a blessing.

  4. I greatly enjoyed this during my first watch, however, my rewatch has triggered me (unrelated to Sound Field's work). That said, I just want to thank your team for putting this together. As I learn more about different styles of worship & music ministry, it helps to ground myself in the origins of gospel outside of theological debates.

  5. Old ministers to Dorsey: Your music is devilish and against Christianity!
    Unblack metal: Hold my beer!

(N.B.- You guys are absolutely amazing. Probably the best channel I discovered in recent times.)

  7. I've grown up in a Hispanic Pentecostal church which was a combination of Rock, CCM, Country, and Gospel. But I played in a black church back in 2008 for a few months and learned real quick how much I needed to catch up. No charts, just ear and feel. But the MD will guide you, not baby you, but guide you.

Played in a white church for a little while and found it to be too easy and forced. I appreciate the growth and challenge of the black gospel, but I thoroughly enjoy the variety in the Hispanic church.

  8. Because ADOS music is the premiere music of the world, and the ADOS church is the premiere musical institution of America. The ADOS (Native Black American) church is the Juilliard of music. Its a cultural, way of life for those of us who grew up in these churches and when you consider that as an institution the ADOS church has produced everything from James Brown, to Whitney Houston, Soul Music etc etc to include those who have been influenced by it. It should really be held in a higher regard than it currently is. Some of the The best singers, the best musicians all tied to the Native Black American/ADOS church.

  9. Such an excellent segment. I think it’s so relevant especially with Ma Rainey recently coming out with Chadwick Boseman , hearing Dorsey’s story is a beautiful tie of those parts after that aren’t show in the movie. Also Mahalia, who in New Orleans we know her as the Queen of Gospel, singing Dorsey, song about his family gives context why it was so powerful, along with her role in the Nation’s fight for civil rights.
I would love to see a another part adding in New Orleans in addressing Gospel, seeing Mahalia is from New Orleans, but also it’s pivotal role in America’s sound; as New Orleans is one of the few cities that allowed Africans to speak their original dialect and share their original rhythms and sounds at Congo Square. Great job again on this.
