This Beginner Finger-Picking video introduces an easy, useful pattern that professional guitarists and songwriters use frequently. Landslide by Fleetwood Mac is a great example! Here’s a plan: 1) Memorize The Pattern; 2) Play It Slowly, watching your right-hand fingers carefully; 3) Gradually pick up speed while keeping your fingers relaxed (this is important!!) Lastly, judge your progress in terms of weeks, not days. Playing anything well on the guitar requires a LOT of repetition, more than you’d think, more than you’d prefer !! Stick with it! It’s worth it and you can do it !

Fantastic teacher! I’ve played guitar for years but never attempted finger picking, It’s about time I learned – especially if I’m trying to play John Prine and Bob Dylan songs. I really appreciate your teaching style, thank you!
I usually use someone else's fingertips to pick, but maybe I'll start using my own! Seriously though, thanks so much for the tutorial. You're a natural teacher. Greetings from Scotland (The same town as Donovan, incidentally) ???????
Great lesson. Thank you. I'll practice that as I'm isolating xxx
Finally someone who breaks it down SLOW and names the strings in the pattern. Priceless
I'm at 7:25 and he still hasn't taught me anything about fingerpicking…..
I got this pickin pattern from you several months ago and now its second nature. I'd like to now know how to use it in a song. Thanks so much for your encouraging way.
You are a great finger picking guitar teacher, the best, explains well.
I like the part about the finger is an extension of the individual while picking and sounds different for each person.
Thank you Sir you just made something click on this pattern that makes it easier to apply —the fact to use 6 342 on chords with E & G in name and to use 5 342 with chords C A D in name and some F opens a door that one can apply and once I get more comfortable w pattern means so many more songs playable and means to master more chords and chord transitions easier thanks for that tip great teaching now maybe at 54 as a beginner where I long struggling w practice no I see light and not a dark tunnel thank you I made more progress with fingerstyle than w anything else
Jonathan I started about six month back. But your finger picking is a revelation. Thank you Sir for keeping me inspired
I’m watching this video 8 years after it was launched
This guy is very good ?
You are the easiest to follow! You actually want people to learn! Best on utube! My personal opinion! ?
???
Absolutely fantastic – 26 years old and just started to learn fingerpicking. Harmonious I can't wait to dive in further – subbed!
Hi Jonathan, I'm impressed with your teaching strategy. I'm 72 and have been a rhythm guitarist for ages. Now I dared finger picking, it's all your fault.

Thanks Johnathan. I’ve just taken up the guitar at the age of 61.
You are a very good teacher!
That’s a fantastic Harmony Sovereign.
Thank you for posting.
Are you still making videos
i JUST WANT YOUTO KNOW i LOVE YOUR WAY OF TEACHING. You make it easy to understand Thank you.
Brilliant as always ?
I realise this is an old video, but after looking at may fingerstyle videos I find yours and finally it’s starting to sink in thanks ?
Hey, great lesson! Thanks for the motivation.
Perfectly comprehensible. Very slow, easy to follow. Brilliant, thank you. John L.
Really clear – very helpful.
Love it Jonathan! At 2:19 when your picking goes from practice mode to music, where is the thump coming from? And does it start sounding like music all of a sudden bc you change the overall tempo or bc you change the duration of each note slightly. I've been working on Basic FP pattern #1 for a few weeks (I have finger picked for years but not this pattern) and when I go faster it sounds more like music, but it's still not quite there. What is the key to making it sound like music instead of monotony? Thanks! Oh and I emailed you at contactsongbike@gmail.com. Is that the correct one. Thanks!
You are amazing, wonderful lesson.
This guy is HIGH AS HELL.?
I'm a novice, but why are we pressing on the 5 string of the Em cord if it's open? I'm sure there's a reasom but Just curious.
Best lesson

Excellent lesson….you have a great teaching style…….
Great, great great. This teacher is the only one who doesn't make me nervous in practicing
You are a wonderful teacher!
Very useful .. Love the way you teach ????
Thank you for the fingerpicking lesson, You do a great job of explaining the very basic information and technique. You take the mystery and lay it out for the beginner like me who was intimated with this technique. I first picked up the guitar in 1983 and have been playing on & off since then. Today was the first time, I realized that I can learn this technique, and it's within my grasp. Thank you !!
i like the length of your lessons, very methodical and really sinks in
is he still receiving mail in the same email – id in 2020 ?
