How To Rap Like J. Cole: Actual Writing Drills

Working at your craft is quintessential to success.

Whether it’s:

Sports
Fitness
Business
Music
Makeup

You have to put in the work everyday to become a master at it.

Most people think that rapping is just a natural gift.

They think you are born with the ability to use your native language in a poetic way with an instrumental backing it.

There is some truth to that.

But you still have to work at it to become the best version of yourself.

In my “J.Cole Tells 21 Savage How He Almost Lost HIs Career” video, J. Cole mentions actual writing drills that he uses to become a better rapper.

HIs manager and Dreamville President Ib, expounds on that in this clip.

  1. And that's what I tell people back in 2013 til 2016 I wanted to do all that battle rap and trying to be the hardest lyricist but I started focusing more on becoming a great writer to the point my unborn kids would have my publishings and masters and learning the mechanics of a artist, not having to be so long length on songs, short verses catching hooks, using hooks as interexploration.refrences.

  2. I usually freestyle to random beats for like 15 – 30 mins and out of that I get a bunch of ideas for new tracks.I also scat while I produce my beats and by the end of that I got some Ideas again.I walk to somewhere open with fresh air and I just write the first thing that comes to mind.I also had another idea for more rhymability,I'mma start studying the dictionary at least 3 times a week or more. Also watching tutorials daily on better mixing and beatmaking tricks. Also if you have instruments and can play them scat to the rhythm for new flows.

  3. I made something I call quick records. Sounds original, right? Lol I pick a beat, download it, write and record a verse to it all in 30 minutes. Obviously 30 minutes won't create the best product, but it gets the pen moving. It's great practice and I really recommend it. It creates a sense of urgency and forces your brain to come up with something. I'm a firm believer it's a volume game. The artist with 300 verses under his belt is going to be more comfortable and sound better compared to the artist with only 10 or 15 verses. It's all about practice! Definitely try it! I'd love to hear your guys' drills as well!

  4. What I do is play the rhyming game but wit extra steps, so maybe I’m walking down the street nd I see a lamp ima think of a bar that incorporates the word lamp nd then think of like 2 other lines, that way I’m constantly freestyling in my head when I want to nd coming up with different ways to play on words
