Charli XCX stopped by the Stereotude studios to talk with John Howard and eat pixie sticks. She dished on Britney Spears, songwriting, and the benefits of crying.

  1. I only discovered Charli XCX yesterday. But since then I've been on a binge…listening to everything she's ever released. Despite her young age, she's got quite a knack for writing super-catchy creative idiosyncratic pop songs. Her music reminds me why I love pop music. She seems to have an intuitive understanding of how that genre works and what the full potential of pop music can be. The key to writing great pop music is knowing how to combine catchy ear-candy hooks….with equal parts forward-thinking idiosyncratic creativity. And Charli XCX's music definitely hits that sweet spot.

I write/record music myself…and while my own music is very different from Charli's, I still find her quite inspiring. Her music has energized my own approach to songwriting in a big way.

Btw, I love the following description she gave of her own music in a recent interview….

"I've always liked pop music like Britney and the Spice Girls. I kind of wanted to blend all of that together and have a prominent bass through all of my songs because I came from the club scene, and even though I write pop music, I wanted that to be there and have these hip-hop beats but a Björk-esque, ethereal magic over all of it. I feel like that's what the record is like: magical, ethereal, gangsta pop."

Well said! She deserves all the success she's been getting lately. She's now got a big fan in me….?
