What is Music Production, and What Do Producers Do?

Maybe you are just curious, maybe you want to get into the  music  business, but you are wanting to know what  music   production  is, and just what is it  music  producers do. Well, I am here with some answers for you.

 Music   production  is the act of making  music  in a format that can be listened to later. A band can perform a song, but it takes a producer to get it into a format ready for distribution. Although many singers, band members, and song writers are professional producers in their own rights, most work with a person that does  music   production  as their primary job.

A  music  producer is a person that works in  music   production . This can mean working with a band or artist to make an album, and/or using mostly electronic instruments, pre-recorded sounds, or hired musicians to create their own songs.

If a Producer is working with a band he or she is the captain of the ship, metaphorically. While part of the job is keeping the artist or band happy, they also are responsible for getting as good an album made as they can. A producer working on their own to make an album still has the same job, only they are themselves the artist as well. In the fashion of modern composers they carefully craft their music, with no one but themselves to please in many cases it can take a long time to get a finished product.

In other cases the producer just had a good idea they wanted to work on and it doesn’t fit any of the artists they normally work with. In that case they will get together musicians to help them make their idea a reality.

The roll of the producer can be more and less important depending on the genre of music. In rap pretty much everything but the actual rhymes is taken care of by the producer. At the other extreme, with some Heavy Metal groups for example, the producer might just be there to make sure the band is recorded properly.

 Music   production  is a rich and varied craft. It can be a hobby, or a life long profession. Producers might seem like they are just names in CD booklets, but the best ones can make a band, guide an okay song into platinum sales, and will generally improve the quality of any album they work on.
