Firstly, songwriting ideas are infinite because they are everywhere around you. You just have to allow yourself to be perceptive to them.
For instance, one songwriter may see a leaf falling from a tree and not think twice about it while another, more mindful and alert songwriter would see that same falling leaf as a metaphor for absolute freedom and a song becomes created from that idea.
You see, once you take the view that songwriting ideas are infinite and all around you then you stop being overly protective of the songs that you’ve already written. You also stop yourself having the view that everything that you write has to be perfect.
Remember, if you write a song that you are not immediately sure of, don’t throw it away, leave it alone for a while and just go onto something else.
Don’t worry, you’ll always think of another idea for a song (if you allow yourself to that is).
Secondly, songwriting ideas are sacred because they come from inside you.
That alone is a fantastic reason for keeping everything that you write. Throwing away a song is just like throwing away a part of you.
You should be proud of your songs whether they seem to be good or bad to you.
The good songs are the ones you perform and the not so good ones should be acknowledged as the stepping-stones that they are and besides, you can always go back to them later with a fresh set of eyes and ears and do some rewriting.
Who knows, rewriting might be the very thing that changes that bad song into a really good one.
You know, it’s OK to write a song about world peace, it’s OK to write a song about love and it’s also OK to write a song about a falling leaf.
As long as the song comes from you, that’s all that matters in the long run.
