It’s incredible to me how many great songs Motown could afford to let go.
It’s hard to keep in mind they were still essentially a very small, family
business, yet they were slaughtering the charts with their main acts, so
many of the other artists couldn’t get a foothold. Still, I maintain some
of the most incredible tunes were found with those acts that didn’t get the
heavy chart action. This one still blows me away.
Actually, I think this was greatest Motown release ever– and I lived and
breathed Motown during my high school and college days.

that bluesy sound!
Sandra was such a key ingredient in the Monitors’ sound. For me, she’s just
like Claudette Robinson; the groups wouldn’t sound right without their
ladies. The Temptations- that one is number one in my heart, but the
Monitors’ version is “easier” for me to listen to, lol! I mean, David tears
my heart out, while Richard gives hope that it’ll all work out for the
best! 🙂
I had read about the Spinners being slated to record the song, but I didn’t
know they actually had. Wow! I know they would have been just as fantastic
as The Monitors and Tempts!

There Is A 3rd Version Of This By The Spinners. It should be on there next
Ace release.
The first Monitors tune I ever heard; just pure class all the way by
Richard, Sandra etc. Love the band track too. Hard to choose a favorite
between this and the Temptations version, but the good news we don’t have
to as both are great, and enough difference to allow them to stand alone on
their respective merits.
Hey buddy! That’s how I feel too. Both versions are strong and even with
the same backing track, you perfectly stated why I love both in different
ways.
I can never get enough of “Say You” haha Every single time this song comes
to mind I play this or I go to my “Gettin’ Ready” album on my iPod and
listen to David and the Tempts version. I love both but David has the
yearning in his version and it’s powerful. Richard voice like you said is
tender one second and rocks out the rest of the song! I like Sandra Fagins
voice in the backing as well! Terrific!
