Last Christmas, there were not many people outside of the Los Angeles singer songwriter fan community who were aware of Colbie Caillat, but this Christmas there are not very many people who have NOT heard, “It starts in my toes, makes me crinkle my nose,” – the catchy hook of her hit single, “Bubbly.” On the radio, on MTV, on television commercials, on iTunes, and on social networking services – millions of music fans have jumped on the “Bubbly” bandwagon.
When Colbie Caillat initially entered the music scene with her debut CD “Coco” there was one question on many people’s minds, and that was – where did she come from so quickly? What propelled her meteoric rise into the public consciousness? The answer to that question lies in one word. Myspace.
Colbie may not have been the only artist to first grab a label’s attention through their success on the social networking site Myspace.com, but she has definitely had one of the most stunning and well-documented journeys.
Caillat’s profile actually sat on myspace unnoticed for several months before the viral phenomenon took hold, but then it started. A user would embed her song on their page. That person’s friends would hear the song and like it. Then they would enjoy the song and embed it themselves, and their friends would do the same. And so on and so on – multiplied by thousands.
When the plays on Caillat’s songs uploaded to her myspace page reached the hundreds of millions, Universal Records took notice and they signed the young Southern California troubador. In an ironic twist, Caillat – now that she has signed with a major label – has bowed to their pressure to remove the very songs that launched her career from her myspace profile and from her fan community’s pages, to be replaced by short clips. This move has been widely criticized, but she has expressed several times via blogs and bulletins that she is attempting to rectify the situation.
Will Caillat be a one hit wonder, or will her sunkissed good looks and catchy hooks carry her success into her sophomore effort and beyond? Time will tell.
