I began writing humorous songs years ago in Nashville, Tennessee. My serious songs weren’t moving so out of sheer boredom, I began to write funny material. I stared writing parodies to some of my favorite Country songs. It was a great practice before writing originals. I began giving audio tapes of my funny songs to a well know hit songwriter and good friend of mine in town. After listening, he would always call me up laughing and many times give me the feedback to hone my craft.
Constructive criticism is very important in any genre of writing. Getting feedback from a professional is great but if you don’t know a pro, then find writing workshops on the internet or even organizations possibly close to your town. Get involved with people who have the same interests in writing. There are many resources online to help you improve your writing.
The great thing about humor is that the world supplies endless amounts of possible material. You can watch people for a day and come home with ten stories. Start with the funniest people in your family or your friends. Keep a notebook handy at all times to write down funny things you see or think of. Focus on anything or situation, then think about how to make it humorous. Always practice in your mind every funny fact you find.
You can research the material of the best comedians. Their work is for the most part original and well thought out. They may use a subject of a prior comedian but the twist will be usually quite different. The past comedy writers famous works, many times weaves into someones new material. With practice, you will develop your own unique style and then people will laugh!
