Usually, when you talk about music from Cuba, you immediately think about the exotic strains of salsa, mambo and cha-cha-chá. Hence, it should come as a shocking revelation that this island country harboring a communist system is actually the birthplace of thrash metal’s most innovative and influential drummer, Dave Lombardo of the metal outfit Slayer. Born under the Cuban flag in the capital city of Havana, Lombardo is considered to be the godfather of double bass drumming because of his aggressive yet tasteful use of two bass drums whilst anchoring the beats of Slayer, one of the four legendary pillars of thrash metal of the ’80s.
His inimitable technique and extraordinary metal grooves were predominantly exhibited in such Slayer masterpiece albums as “Hell Awaits,” “Reign in Blood,” “South of Heaven” and “Seasons in the Abyss.” He then left Slayer in 1992 and formed the groove metal project named Grip, Inc., exploring more progressive and expressive drum structures and rhythms. He also teamed up with Faith No More frontman Mike Patton to create Fantômas, an avant-garde metal band that further stretched Lombardo’s abilities by incorporating other musical styles apart from metal. But after a decade and countless side projects, Lombardo eventually returned to Slayer in 2002. Not only continuing where he left off by showing his vintage form, he also took his playing to the next level by unveiling some brand-new chops in the 2006 “Christ Illusion” and 2009 “World Painted Blood” albums.
And after 30 years of drumming, Dave Lombardo is still going strong and continues to inspire numerous rock and metal drummers around the world.
