Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question…

Q: I started my early days on guitar by playing rock and rock-blues. This was mostly using just the minor scales. But, now I’ve joined a band and I’m trying to get into other styles. This means I need to get much better at playing major melody and eventually major scale soloing. Could you make a lesson that demonstrates how to study and practice developing major scale melodies? Thanks.

A: The major scale is a versatile scale that can have the possibility of several different emotional effects in music. The major scale can offer us both up-lifting effects, or triumphant musical effects. Or, as we’ll often find in; Country Western, or Folk music, the effects of the use of the major scale can be sad or even a heartbroken musical direction. So, it is for these reasons, that the major scale needs to be addressed by way of a lot of serious practice, as well as, work on music theory concepts. The more songs you play and the more musical situations you find yourself in, the greater likelihood is that you’ll need to be able to compose and improvise using the structure of the major keys sometime sooner than later.
