This Beginner Finger-Picking video introduces an easy, useful pattern that professional guitarists and songwriters use frequently. Landslide by Fleetwood Mac is a great example! Here’s a plan: 1) Memorize The Pattern; 2) Play It Slowly, watching your right-hand fingers carefully; 3) Gradually pick up speed while keeping your fingers relaxed (this is important!!) Lastly, judge your progress in terms of weeks, not days. Playing anything well on the guitar requires a LOT of repetition, more than you’d think, more than you’d prefer !! Stick with it! It’s worth it and you can do it !

  1. Fantastic teacher! I’ve played guitar for years but never attempted finger picking, It’s about time I learned – especially if I’m trying to play John Prine and Bob Dylan songs. I really appreciate your teaching style, thank you!

  2. I usually use someone else's fingertips to pick, but maybe I'll start using my own! Seriously though, thanks so much for the tutorial. You're a natural teacher. Greetings from Scotland (The same town as Donovan, incidentally) ???????

  3. I got this pickin pattern from you several months ago and now its second nature. I'd like to now know how to use it in a song. Thanks so much for your encouraging way.

  4. Thank you Sir you just made something click on this pattern that makes it easier to apply —the fact to use 6 342 on chords with E & G in name and to use 5 342 with chords C A D in name and some F opens a door that one can apply and once I get more comfortable w pattern means so many more songs playable and means to master more chords and chord transitions easier thanks for that tip great teaching now maybe at 54 as a beginner where I long struggling w practice no I see light and not a dark tunnel thank you I made more progress with fingerstyle than w anything else

  5. Hi Jonathan, I'm impressed with your teaching strategy. I'm 72 and have been a rhythm guitarist for ages. Now I dared finger picking, it's all your fault.

  6. Love it Jonathan! At 2:19 when your picking goes from practice mode to music, where is the thump coming from? And does it start sounding like music all of a sudden bc you change the overall tempo or bc you change the duration of each note slightly. I've been working on Basic FP pattern #1 for a few weeks (I have finger picked for years but not this pattern) and when I go faster it sounds more like music, but it's still not quite there. What is the key to making it sound like music instead of monotony? Thanks! Oh and I emailed you at contactsongbike@gmail.com. Is that the correct one. Thanks!

  7. Thank you for the fingerpicking lesson, You do a great job of explaining the very basic information and technique. You take the mystery and lay it out for the beginner like me who was intimated with this technique. I first picked up the guitar in 1983 and have been playing on & off since then. Today was the first time, I realized that I can learn this technique, and it's within my grasp. Thank you !!
