Genos, the latest flagship Digital Workstation from Yamaha, is an incredibly inspiring songwriting tool as well as a powerful performance and studio instrument. Prolific Nashville songwriter, Ashley Gorley, was asked by Yamaha to spend some time working with the Genos and then to give us his thoughts. Ashley has written dozens of number one singles and has over three hundred songs recorded by several prominent artists. Here, we get a glimpse into Ashley’s process and we learn why he thinks the Genos is a terrific songwriting companion.

I'm shocked at some of the negative comments in the comments section. Yes the Genos is very expensive
but for the price you are also paying for the entire catalog of Yamaha Tyros sounds from the Tyros 1 right
through to Tyros 5 in addition to brand new sounds like Revo Drums with wave-cycle and many different
velocity samples. I'm currently using Halion 6 but as I recently had bad luck getting Halion Symphonic
Orchestra to work I'm concerned that if I ever have to reinstall everything I might not be able to get Halion
back. In some cases it's safer to have these kind of sounds burned onto internal ROM chips than trusting
your hard drive that can corrupt at any given moment. I would probably be happy with a Tyros 2 or a
Yamaha Motif module. You can do midi sequencing on these workstation keyboards or audio multi tracking
within your DAW. Anyway I'm not in a rush to buy a workstation or a Motif but I am thinking about it maybe
in the future.
if the 'Genos' has the same ridiculously bad sequencer with amateurish features I had on the Tyros 2, I am sorry to say but not even children would do 'songwriting' on it. I love the Yamaha sounds, but the sequencer is a joke. And the price for new is astronomical. These keyboards are only good if you want to record your one-finger version of Jingle Bells and want to end up in debt or something. I'd rather get a Korg, they have a decent sequencer, although the sounds are not as good as the Yamaha. Always something missing. I am glad I learned to play piano, I can do all the songwriting I want with that, and there's nothing missing there.
The Genos is WAY WAY WAY overrated. They call it an arranger keyboard …. but, it really isn't. It's more of a band in the box …. For one, you can not interject multiple time signatures within a song, for example, go from 4/4 to 2/4 and then back to 4/4… NOT without exporting and doing something to the midi file and then reimporting it.
You can not change your tempos in the middle of a song – NOT without doing some serious style recreating.
It's a great keyboard for those who want simple stuff – but, I wouldn't call it an "arranger" workstation.
This keyboard would be awesome if it had the sequencer that the MOTIF has. That particular sequencer you could intermix time signatures, and have its own tempo track…
As an arranger – I think these are crucial capabilities that are missing from this keyboard. What a shame. They market it as an arranger keyboard – and yet – it isn't. It's a really, really glorified band in the box.
Get with the program YAMAHA!!!!
