Hey guys, so this week I got a question that I’m going to modify a bit, but basically the question is asking how can you make lyrics like some of the greats. Now obviously there’s a ton of work that goes into this and some measure of natural talent, but here are the three things all the greats have in common.

Poetic skill.

First, these guys are masters of a huge range of poetic techniques. They have no problem writing an extended metaphor with multiple wordplays while holding a complex multi-syllable rhyme scheme. These guys are nothing short of masters of language. Articulating an arrangement in alliteration aint at all ardous. The flip similes like fast food workers flip burgers. The list goes on and on. If you want to get to that level, look up a bunch of poetic devices and start studying them. Here’s a few you need:

Wordplay
Simile
Metaphor
Assonance
Consonance
Imagery

And the list goes on and on. Not only do you need to be able to use all these techniques, you have to be able to seamlessly blend them together. You can work on polishing this part of your craft indefinitely.

Your own unique style

Now, to layer on top of the english skills, you need to have your own unique style. None of the greats stole a style from anyone else, they’ve all come with a style that’s different from anyone else. This can be in their beats, their topics, their delivery, their writing style, or any other variety, but no great just stole someone else’s style.

They may have, instead, stolen many small aspects from other artists, then layered their own unique spin on it. If your style is too similar to everything else that’s being put out, it will never stand alone. That’s simply the way music works, you can’t be a breakout artist by simply following established artists.

You see this a lot as various artists get bigger, many smaller artists scramble to copy their style. If you ever want to become one of the greats, I’d highly advise against this. It doesn’t mean you have to do the opposite, but you definitely have to make your music your own. Don’t be another multi-heavy eminem clone or something similar.

A message

Finally the last, and probably most important, recurring theme in all great artists is a resounding and impactful message. It doesn’t mean the message comes up in every song, but the artists that stick around for the long haul have messages that mean something. Messages that resonate with people. Sure you can rap about having money and being a baller, but how long will that last? Nas raps stories and messages about where he wants to see the world. Kendrick does the same thing. These are messages that resonate with a large community or are insightful in some way. You need to speak to people about something they care about.

These artists are making unique sounding music with meaning that’s nice to listen to, all wrapped up in poetic language. If you want even a remote chance of making an impact like that, that’s where you’ll have to start. Then you’ll need to work your face off every second of every day to refine the skills and get the exposure. Easy enough, right? Good luck out there!

  1. Could you tell me if this is any good?

Girl I New you were trouble all along

Probably the reason we didn’t last that long

You were too busy sucking on someones shlong

I got conned and You’re the main reason why I wrote this song

I always thought that you were better then rest

But now I know you were just a test

Now You think that I’m just a pest

You told me not to worry about the rest

But look at us now you treat me like a cow

I always ask myself how the fuck did I get to this

I feel like you just took the piss

You made me believe in happiness

Did you not get the gist?

    You were so fucking crisp

Now I just feel like a dick

Do you not feel sick? For getting with that prick

You just gave me a flick

    then you left so quick

You were the one that I picked

I was never strict I let you do what you want

Now I just fucking cant understand where I went wrong

How could I be so blind for that long

You know you cheated and you did so wrong

Remember our first kiss you nearly missed

    You know I was dissed?

I know you’re going to come back crawling after this

You left me in the mist i find it so hard to focus on something other then us

I never knew it was a bitch hiding behind that mask

Man I hate the feeling of getting ditched for that guy that was a snitch

    Huh what do you know?

He hurt you and now you’re starting to come back

Now you know what it’s like having a broken heart

    Doesn’t it feel so dark?

Girl it’s never too late to restart

Nah you will find that too hard youre still getting in his car

    You’re better than this

You’re not going to go far I know you’re only together for a laugh

Do you ever think of us

It feels like I’ve been chucked under a bus

Every time I try and speak you just shut my beak

When I was with you I was at my peek

But now I’m on a low

My days go so slow without you now

Why don’t you just take a bow

You’ve done enough you can’t hurt me anymore

I’m going to laugh when I see you at the store

Because all I will remember is that you’re a whore

You get slammed more then a door

I’m done with you you’ve got a few loose screws

The only thing I had to lose was you

  2. Yo Dono, i was wondering where i should get music from. What recourses are there where i can get a large amount of untagged rap beats? As well as what kind of music should i be searching for?
