  1. I guess we all are familiar with Lemmy from Motorhead here. Do you know why we don't have little Lemmies growing in metal and rock around the world anymore? Because the rock n roll scene is full of black metalers, prog metalers and cheap copies of Bon Jovi. And if this wasn't enough, these black, prog or whatever metalers are a bunch of nerds who sit down all day and think of "How did they do it in the 80s?"

  2. Thanks a lot for this video!
Not only gave it insight and thoughts that I didn't really had like that, it also reinforced some of my own beliefs and principles and it motivated to keep going this road, even though I'm not too far in yet and not the fastest person on earth.
Loved the inspirational and positive, but nethertheless real and realisitc approach of this video! Keep it up!

  3. #3 struck me pretty hard. I studied music in community college and it was always super competitive and I would always compare myself to other players. He’s spot on about how it’s not about how good of a player you are, it’s about what’s authentic.

Also #4 : he’s so right about how some people use perfection to put off taking the next step forward ??????????

  4. So I'm into 80's metal as a guitarist (hair bands, speed metal and new wave of British heavy metal. But I like the double kick of Nickolas Barker.
Do you think it's possible to creat a sound that captures those different styles in one?

  5. Just stumbled on this last night and I just want to say thank you so much for this. This is what I needed for a boost of confidence and more information.

I'm 50 and I just started writing again after 20 years of not playing any music. As I was writing yesterday I felt I had to keep reminding myself that there will be people that like my music and to make the best music that I can make. I'm wanting to share art and words for the sake of sharing. I'm going to make mistakes and learn as I go and that's okay. I realize my "work" won't be as polished and as detailed as "blah blah" artist, but you're 100% right… this is my art and only I can do it my way. I think it's easy to get discouraged, but if you're patient good things will come.

I'm about 85% done with my first song and I've shared a rough mp3 with a handful of friends and they've been really supportive and positive about it. I just need to keep that train rolling!!

  6. Principle number 4 really spoke to me. One way I get around from getting stuck in trying to create the perfect track is to set a dateline. It helps move forward. Really excited for the song writing course. Keep up the great work.

  7. Don't go into playing the guitar saying I am going to write a song. I have sat down and practiced for 2 hours I have a 4 track on my smartphone and I promise this is the best way to find a hook. When you have something you like record it. This is the way almost every song I've written has been formulated. I got this from an interview with Michael Schenker he just plays the guitar… He says if I play for a couple of hours I'm going to come up with a hook. Then go back to that hook the next day if you still feel like you like it after sleeping on it. You have a keeper. Another tip, Do not go into a practice session trying to write a specific type of song you may miss some great songs because it wasn't what you're looking for. In closing, if you have a band and you are trying to find your style take that one hook you have and introduce it to the band. You will be surprised what happens when 3 or 4 other minds help out.

  8. this isn't the series for songwriting is it? you guys are right chasing perfection takes away from the purity of your own music…..so jason…..bring on the new album…doesnt have to be perfect…:)
