34 Replies to “How To Write A Worship Song (Explained by GRAMMY® Winning Songwriter)”

  1. I can’t believe he admits so much of what is wrong with CCM…. The shallow droning and often heretical (Hillsong) lyrics of dollar-driven intent.

  2. I appreciate the information here. I guess I always thought the main ingredient of worship music was authentic worship. Just heartfelt moments spent in the presence of God in prayer or in His Word. This video seems so formulaic. ????? That being said, I think there may be a difference between worship music and "hit" worship music. I love the way the Getty's write. They seem to embody the Word through their music. But preferences are just preferences, so…

  3. I am "Older" like 59 years old. I have been a song writer since my 20s. I have written songs for Progressive Rock bands all during the 90s. But my own style is not progressive rock. When I write a song and don't tell anyone who wrote it they like it. When they hear it's one I wrote they say. "Oh that sounds so 80s" So how do you write a song that doesn't sound 80s? I listen to all the modern worship like Red Rocks, Elevation, Church of The City, etc…And I thought my songs were very similar sounding. Is there a certain chord or song structure that is different from "The 80s"???

  4. Hey! To whoever is reading this, you are so loved and you matter! And right now I just want to tell you about Jesus?you don’t have to listen to me, you don’t have to agree with me, but I promise you that Jesus loves you so much and He died for you out of that love!??

Jesus died for every single person on the cross,He died for me, you, him, her, them and everyone all so we could be made right with God! “For God so loved the world he gave his one and only beggoten Son, that whoever so believed in him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16)

now don’t worry if you’re a little bit confused by what that means— when I say that “Jesus died so we could be made right with God”,what I mean is that Jesus payed the debt for our sins in full, He died so that every single one of us could be forgiven by God for our sins. we have all sinned against God(what that means is that we’ve all made mistakes & fallen short of Gods biblical law), BUT God loves YOU so much that He sent a saviour, He sent His one and only Son so that YOU could be forgiven for all your sins, have that burden taken off you and start again through Jesus!Jesus saves us from our sins and the consequences from those sins, but He also saves us with His love, His peace that surpasses all understanding, His Joy and His grace!

Jesus loves you so much and God loves YOU so much that if you accept Him(Jesus) as your Lord and saviour, confess your sins to Him and believe God raised him from the dead HE WILL save you and you can spend forever with Him! “If you declare with your mouth,”Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved” (Romans 10:8)

now you may be thinking “ I want to believe in Jesus, I think do believe in Him but there’s a part of me that doesn’t” DONT PANIC, JESUS WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU! He knows your heart, He knows what’s going on for you, He knows you want to believe more and more in Him, just talk to Him about it, whatever is on your mind don’t worry Gods got it!there is never any issue that is too big for God, I promise you He understands it all!

“ if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9)

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10)

There is nothing you could ever do for Him to stop loving you, Jesus loves you! And let me tell you, this isn’t one of those kind of relationships where you spend half the time sitting around thinking “Hmmm do they really love me?” Because Jesus already wants a relationship with you! He loves you, He literally died so you could be forgiven!

when He died for us on the cross He thought about us individually, He knows you personally, He knows your heart, He knows your situation,He knows all the things you’ve done and regret, He knows how much you wish someone could understand the things you don’t say and how you wish they knew what was really going on for you. Jesus knows it all, He doesn’t see you as your mistakes, nor does He see you as your regrets, He sees you for your heart, for who you are and He sees you as someone he cares and loves for deeply! He loves you! I don’t know if you need to hear this, but just in case you do I also need to assure you that God is NOT waiting for you mess up! He’s not waiting to leave you (in-fact he promises to never leave or forsake you), BUT what He IS WAITING for is for you to accept Him into your life so you never have to feel alone again! He is a genuine, forgiving, all loving, He is a rock for everyone and a saviour for everyone!

Jesus loves you more than you could ever know and He’s waiting to lift that weight off your shoulders, He’s waiting to take away all your pain and hurt, He’s waiting to welcome you with open arms, He’s waiting to forgive you, He’s waiting to save you!HE LOVES YOU!thank you for reading this, have a great day and there is no better moment than right now to accept JESUS into your life! Repent and turn away from your sins, GOD LOVES YOU! He is “the way and the truth and the life” No one comes to the Father except through Him, (John 14:6) He wants you to be with Him one day in heaven!put your trust in Him! God wants to save you! God bless ?

  5. This wasn't as helpful as I thought it was going to be. I can Sing high and low but mostly prefer low as i think it's more beautiful. I actually thought this was gonna point me to a direction where I can make instrumentals or if anyone can contact me on making a instrumental for me and I'll pay. I request synth music as I'm trying to make Christian synth music with my low voice. An example of my voice would be a mashup of frank sinatra and rick astley. Contact me please at alexvalencia360@gmail.com I can write songs and sing, it's instruments I can't play or not knowing how to make instrumentals. God bless!?

  6. I was so confused before, everyone wanted me to become so many things, but since my childhood, I don't know I always had song writer in my head but never said that out, and then I left the thought . And again and again it kept coming , now I'm realising that God wants me to write songs about him ….. I am so glad now I know what I want to be and am so grateful.

  7. Seth I want to use already written material as a cover but change the genre it was written in and present it as a demo for my own after purchasing the mechanical license for said song. Next take and R and B song change the lyrics but keep the melody but add my own accessories. For example I went to Harry Fox Agency purchased the license to Alicia Keys "No One" changed most of the lyrics (after thousands of edits) including the title. How can I present the demo to you or someone else? Need input on this matter please.

  8. Praise the Lord. Thank you for the video. I agree with you about the song content that must be Biblical. Some very popular contemporary song don't quite do that. Lyrics such as: "You didn't want heaven without us so you brought heaven down." That makes no biblical sense to me.

  9. From 3:32 to 3:40 is exactly why Christian music lacks creativity nowadays. It's also the same reason why almost every song in CCM is the same. They are milking that formula for every last cent it's worth. The CCM industry is just like every other industry, it's money driven first and foremost. Which is why, if new and upcoming artists don't sound like hillsong, bethel, Chris tomlin, Jesus culture, etc. They won't make it to the radio. Disclaimer, I like listening to these guys I mentioned. I just don't think they are the gold standard for what worship music and ccm should sound like. That decision is made by the industry and certainly NOT by GOD.

  10. Thanks for sharing your ideas on writing christian songs. You are a true inspiration to help other christians to be an encouragement and a blessing as your advise and ideas here will help someone to write a song who will in due time bless or encourage someone who might go through a tough time and that song that you helped someone to write will unknowingly help that person through that trial and be a blessing. God richly bless you!!!

  11. Keep melodies accessible

    Use repetition

It should feel better every time it's sung

    Verse/Chorus/Bridge variate

    Use easy key progressions

    Reflects biblical truth

    Putting words in people's mouth

    Register with CCLI

  12. Thanks so much for your advise. I really appreciate what you said about the importance of scriptural truth. Our choir and praise teams have to add or take away words to make the song line up with scripture correctly. Thanks a million, may the Lord bless you brother.

  13. Love it! Worship is definitely more challenging than it seems. It’s definitely got to come from a genuine place. And actually leading worship or having experience leading worship at a church and learning how the room responds to certain songs I think is crucial. You start to get a feel for what works well and what doesn’t. Awesome video Seth!
