Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question…
Q: My friend and I have been recording a lot lately, and we’re trying to enhance the recordings by not playing the exact same thing on each of our tracks. But, somehow we can’t seem to dream-up enough good duet ideas. Could you do a lesson on composing duets? Mostly for the rhythms, but also some info. on guitar duet melodies would be great as well.
Phil – Oakland, California, USA
A: Two guitars performing as a duet will sound absolutely fantastic when making recordings or playing live. Whether its rock bands such as; Guns & Roses, or Iron Maiden, or possibly acoustic guitar duets, like the Assad brothers, or Acoustic Alchemy, when we bring the blend of two guitars (and mix all of the different types of contrasts that we can possibly have), we start generating some very cool sounds. And, we start creating some fantastic guitar music. In this video, I’ll break down several approaches that we can use when it comes to creating guitar duets. We’ll look primarily at rhythm concepts between the two instruments, but we’ll also spend some time on melody concepts as well.
