  1. I was holding out hope that John Prine would have been in the top five. Possibly the greatest singer/songwriter to not be a household name.

  2. I love Jason’s voice on “Country Roads”
His big, masculine voice actually worked well with “Both Sides Now”. I’d like to hear more men address Joni’s music, just to hear another side of it.

  3. I truly don't mean this as a dis – but I couldn't help but think the "Both Sides Now" performance could have been billed as "What if Eddie Vedder sang…." ?

  4. I would had Dan Fogelberg on any list of the greatest singer-songwriters. Without a doubt one of the best ever!
    RIP Daniel Grayling Fogelberg.

  5. Billy Bragg should be here, I think. Tom Waits, too. Not sure if they qualify as singer/songwriters, but Pete Townshend and Ray Davies should be up there, IMHO.

  6. First, this list was fun to listen to. However, I'd replace about 1/4 of these with the songs on Carole's Tapestry album alone. What can I say; everyone (including me), has an opinion. So, I'll also offer that you missed Willie's Always on my Mind, or, Crazy. And oh, if you had opted for one of the Jones' girls stellar songs, that would have been interesting (either Rickie Lee, or Norah). But very strong props for not missing Harry Chapin. Finally, if I'm nitpicking, I would have Bob #1 and Joni #2, but that's me. This was fun though.

  7. It's crazy that Leonard Cohen is not in the top 3 of this list. Also John Stewart should be on the list. No Lennon and McCartney? No Carole King? A lot of the choices are dubious next to these giants.

  8. This is the top 20 singer/songwriter songs that you grew up with in the US only in the 70's & 80"s . It is a very narrow band of musical styles …certainly not – OF ALL TIME !! In such a listing i would expect to see at minimum 1x British artist, 1x Australian artist ..and so forth. You often overlook the amazing pub based culture of extremely talented artists here in Australia ….John Butler (Trio), Missy Higgins (jazz rooted pop) ,Paul Kelly ( Living Legend) …and his protege – Kasey Chambers …she may be a little bit country…but OMG she is doing some serious heavy lifting in the industry in both AU and the US alike,…and is a definite "torch carrier" for the Singer/Songwriter genre. Also worthy contenders (whom you failed to include)are Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Johnny Cash, The Boss, David Bowie, Van Morrison. You're welcome!

  9. "Everything I Own" and "Wichita Lineman" are both in the excellent 2009 movie "Bandslam." Good list, thank you very much for the tour of my elementary, junior high, and high school years. Send In The Clowns is actually Sondheim. The real song is quite a bit different in meter, melody, and phrasing than as rendered here. Kind of a hard song to nail without quite a bit of study and rehearsal, with all the complex meter changes and missing beats. The phrasing should be shortened at every phrasing juncture, never lengthened. It's from music theater (A Little Night Music) and is much more a recitative than an arena rock song or an aria.

  10. As a Michigander I have to say, if you were going to include Gordon Lightfoot, the song should have been "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."

  11. Why do folks think a certain artist automatically makes the cut on a 20 song list? It is a song list not an artists list. Now smack your forehead and say "Doh" like Ralph Simpson please.
