These videos are meant to break down the songwriting process into easy to use tips, techniques, and tools that spark creativity and help you apply them like the pros. I do my best to make videos that share the ‘secrets’ of writing great songs without holding anything back.
My main focus with this channel is to pass on the tools of the trade that I have learned and found to make a big difference to my creative flow and songwriting. There is an old saying that goes “everybody has one great song in them”, I hope to show you that once you know what makes a song great, you can apply it to all the songs you write. Start from the heart, follow your gut and revise with your mind.

Hey, let me know your favorite Max Martin hook?
Probably the best music writing advice ever
I’m so curious how this applies to jokes. Phonetic joking?
Corporate commercial pop songs DO have intellectual "meanings". The purpose, to promote a pop song, is to manipulate, corrupt, destruct healthy young characters, aesthetics, culture in the lower class (the majority) of society…. etc. Pop songs are twisting, deteriorating the meaning of true love, healthy relationships and sexuality. It is not accidental that corporate companies ( and government) spent incredible amount of money to run music industry.
good one. but the only melodic tip here is vowel sounds. what are the other melody writing tips
love to see Sia working. i take a similar approach when i write. cool video

Thank you so much for opening my eyes on the songwriting process. I always used to think that everybody usually comes up with lyrics first, and THEN they compose a melody to those lyrics. Maybe it's because Elton John once said in an interview that these are the lyrics that "define" the song. Well, that was his method, but now I realize that so many of the great hits started from simply humming or singing nonsens and "mere vowels" (c) B. Spears)) James Hetfield of Metallica does it the same way singing "Wha-na-na" on his demos first. And W.A. Mozart also said that "poetry is a servant to music"! By the way, another interesting thing is that it is more effective to write chords TO the melody instead of coming up with a chord progression and then trying to compose a melody to those chords, it was also a revelation to me.
This might be the most important songwriting advice video you’ve ever put out. This to me is the driving force behind what makes something listenable or not.
Who!? ???
Truly amazing knowledge.Thank you
Sia ??
Incredible. A true art AND science
What I took away from this was “it’s not what you say but how you say it”
It's not what you sing but rather how you sing it. I feel many bands lose that as they get older. They suddenly feel what they have to say is more important then how they are saying it. When this happens we end up with the junk we are getting today. The greatest lyrics without a great melody will get lost, abandoned and fall on deaf ears. Terrible lyrics but a terrific melody will win over an audience every time. Now if you can put together a great melody then you can work on the lyrics over and over until you get something more meaningful. Melody first, meaning second or maybe 15th.
I have read where Robert Plant thinks Led Zeppelins songs have no meaning. To me they are some of the most significant songs I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. It is not what they are saying but rather how they are saying it. Make me want to sing along, no matter how meaningless the lyrics are, that is what makes a great song. Sorry WXPN.
She certainly was using the technique but my opinion of Sia is that she’s not a great songwriter. She tries too hard with her melodies and they just sound rambling. Too complex. The most catchy songs are the ones that have the most simple melodies.
Good video this mate, keep it up.
Shocked at how long this has been up with any less than millions and millions of views.
You have good content, dude: smart, simple, and straight to the point,- just like any musical mentor I've ever had. You talk about the "important" stuff, the stuff that works, and your examples are strong. The Stones were doing this "building songs around vowels" decades ago, and while I doubt that they were on a young Max Martin's radar when he was growing up listening to songs in a language he didn't understand, for both of these giants to use vowels as a launching point for melody is not a coincidence. Good job!
6.66?
Love this ????
Then here comes Sia. Does what max does then performs it.
Its fucking awful how its gone tho isnt it
Great video, thanks

Hey Tone! How the heck are ya? Hope well. Quick question, how exactly does Max create melody? Like technically or specifically in regards to how he creates them. The video suggests he does some phonetic bumbling. I've read somewhere, that he actually sits around with his co-writers and does the same thing and somewhat demands excellence. Doesn't allow something just mediocre to be the hook. It's a tricky subject, especially since I create melodies pretty frequently. I have different methods. A lot of the best do come from mumbling ideas over a nice Chord structure, or messing in the DAW or on the piano in key. Sometimes I try to create a rhythm with just maybe the 5th note of a triad chord used in that chord progression, and once I get a nice balanced rhythm (in comparison to other parts of the song, verse/pre) I will then adjust notes, and use as much music theory as I can to get to something. But it's funny, 9/10 times on that specific journey I will accidenilty or hear something in what I've done and attack that part, why does it make me feel so good? What is happening? How can I create the melody out of that… Would love your thoughts here.
Thank you! This videos are just Amazing! Keep doing this amazing work, you deserve a lot more visuals!
Brittney Spears used "mere" in a sentence?

Loved the sia part, deedeedada deedoo lol
I think this is why i like kpop.. no matter the language, if it has a good melody, then for me its a good song ????
Max Martin son n dad
What songs is this?
Hey I have a question! Do you think Max Martin creates a song with chord progressions and drums first or creates the song with the melody line first?
Thank you! So incredibly helpful! Subscribed.
Thats why music with different languages sound different, trying to write with japanese lyrics give totally different results than english or russian
Hi Tony, wow the way she just knocked out that whole melody.. amazing! Obviously I'm clueless about song writing aside from what I've learned from you lol but one of my all time favourite songs is Slave to the Rhythm Glace Jones, as soon as I hear the opening notes of that song I instantly know it. Love how powerful music is! Have a lovely Easter and hope you stuff yourself with chocolate ??
And a question: What is better?
Make the melody in a piano first and then sing with vowels?
Or make the melody just with the vowels and playing chords in the piano?
Man… As always adding a lot of value with these videos. Now I understand why I don´t understand the meaning of the lyrics of a lot of my favorite songs, but it gives me a lot of emotions!!!
And yes, simple is not easy! Because there is a lot of stuff to combine (melodic motif, great phonetic melody, lyrics that match with those vowels, etc), but at the end of the day you will have a gold song with a lot of practice!
Keep going bro!!!
