  1. Lennon and McCartney as a duo? As individuals Lennon # 3 McCarney # 2 Dylan # 1 if Lennon would have lived maybe tied with McCartney. Neal Young should not be on the list, Brain Wilson # 4

  2. I'd say David Bowie should be on a rock list. There's very few people who I can think of that I like 10 songs by them let alone at least 30 songs. I'd say David Bowie, Queen, and like the Bee Gees (who I wouldn't put on this list because they're not rock) are like the ones I can think of. After that for me probably, Springsteen, Dylan (although I do like others to perform them), Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Beatles (although, I'd say because of what they did, I'm sort of burnt on them) Prince (if you consider him Rock). The problem is, this is so subjective. Like I agree these are all great song writers, but some people are going to be more drawn to some people than others. Like people rave about Fleetwood Mac all the time. I mean, if they're on I'll listen, but I've never sought out to listen to them. Do I think they're as good as people say. Yes. I just don't care for them personally.

  3. List 10 "Great" Songs Brian Wilson created "Both" the Music & Lyrics for? Brian Wilson does Not belong in the same league with Lennon, Dylan, Simon & McCartney.

  4. My top ten and not in order would be Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Bruce Springsteen, Mark Knopfler, Kris Kristofferson, Neil Young, Tom Waits and I can't think of the last one but it definitely wouldn't be Lennon or McCartney.

  5. Ray Davies
    Tom Petty
    Lennon/McCartney
    George Harrison
    Warren Zevon
Bernie Taupin (Elton John's best songs)
    Queen
    Bob Seger
    Bob Dylan
    Jeff Lynne

    I haven't ordered them because I can't decide.

  6. I screamed when you mentioned Warren Zeavon! One of my top 10 songwriters of all time. I do agree with you on many of these, but I missed Ray Davies though who is such an underrated writer in my opinion.

  7. I don't disagree with any pick, except I would bump Elvis for Carole King OR Joni Mitchell (take your pick, mine would be King).

You're right, this could easily be a top 25 or 50. I'm glad you included Paul Simon. He has written decades of brilliant songs…I'm surprised his songs are not covered more. But then again, who is going to improve on "Bridge a Bridge Over Troubled Water"? It's the closest to perfect song, outside of several Mozarts, that I have ever heard.

I think you got more right than wrong, and none of them are really wrong. I could make an argument for Prince, Neil Young, Bernie Taupin, Smokey Robinson, Buddy Holly (how great could he have been???)

I think Dylan is #1, but Lennon/McCarthy were the greatest collaborating writers.(duh).

Brian Wilson made great songs, compositions, and arrangements, but I would not consider him a brilliant writer. Not a bad or even OK writer….a good writer, but not in the top ten.

A solid list, and I respect it.

  8. Top 10 Greatest Songwriters IMO

    10. Roger Waters
    9. Joni Mitchell
    8. Bruce Springsteen
    7. Billy Joel
    6. Paul Simon
    5. Pete Townshend
    4. Brian Wilson
    3. Paul McCartney
    2. John Lennon
    1. Bob Dylan

  9. I listened to them all, a little from every country, but in my opinion the greatest, most talented song melodist genius of last 50 years was Lucio Battisti. Which is practically almost unknown in Anglo-Saxon countries.

  10. Okay list. I agree with most of your choices but I honestly don't know how you don't put Jason Isbell on this list. It's insulting lol he's arguably the greatest lyric writer of all time. Most consider him to be the best songwriter of this generation. I have never heard an artist who can paint such a vivid picture with just a few verses and a chorus.

    Just a little shocking
