Are you a songwriter and having trouble writing songs? Are you trying to learn how to write great lyrics?
In this video I am going to share the number one thing keeping you from writing great songs and great lyrics!
What I’m going to say in this video may surprise you, so I’m going to back it all up with clips from Dave Grohl, John Mayer, Kurt Cobain, and David Bowie about the process of songwriting and being creative.
Many people struggle with how to write lyrics, chord structures, melodies, harmonies, etc… BUT, the FIRST thing we have to overcome is the FEAR of judgement. How do we do this? Start with NOT judging ourselves or others. When we accept that everyone IS going to judge us one way or the other, we can just allow people to have their own opinion, and carry on with being creative.
After all, writing songs is about being creative and allowing divine inspiration to flow through us.

Hei mr Jim my name is Kevin im 17 i really wanna be muscian or a rockstar a writter but the problem i got some song that i wrote but i realize the song that i wrote sound like nirvana the stroke all those populer band form 2000s and the lyrcs in my head i allways think im the worst lycsis and im afarid i wont make it i really want to.chagged the world with my music and i really need some advice
Tbh the Cobain mindset has sabotaged more musicians than it has helped, Cobain was lying, his Journals show him drawing out F7 and F6 chords, which are not simple chords, he absolutely knew his chords and knew a little music theory, enough to get by.
Much of what Cobain says is a deliberate attempt to maintain this facade of effortlessness and punkdom that he maintained and which has since been heavily debunked by everyone around him at the time that goes on and on about how hard working he was and how insistent on constant practice he was. How he really wanted to be in a big rock band, how ambitious he was, how he wanted to sell millions of records etc.
Cobain's effortless genius is a lie as is his lack of any knowledge of music, he absolutely knew what he was doing and he'd been doing music since he was a child.
Learning music theory will not impede you from making music you like, if anything it'll help you get to what you're imagining in your head faster. The only thing you need to keep in mind is that some people find success breaking the rules of music theory on a couple of chord changes from time to time and you should use music theory, not be used by it.
Learn your theory, learn the chords, all of them. Learn your notes, memorize the notes and where they are on the fretboard. It will not impair your songwriting regardless of what the Cobain aesthetic might lead you to believe
I think that there are really when i grt right down to it, two parts of the creation process.
Not just for songs, but in general.
One is what you said.
Just create, just chanel whatever it is, or however you define it for yourself. Personally for myself i define it as playing around, manipulating elements and seeing what sticks.
But without just creating a whole thing freely and without any or much judgement, then it there wont be anything for the second step.
The second step is, well, judging.
But not judging in this way whare you judge yourself for what you created. No, its just judging the ideas, whether you like them or not, and how do you like them, in which arrangement, and can you get yourself to apreciate what they are trying to say, and can you help them say whatever you see is the potencial in them.
I personally do think that there is a time for judging, but its not when you are creating.
And again, judgin in the sence of evaluating, of observing, of revising.
I have over a 1000 ideas at this point, and i just do it as much as it is fun.
Just get your mind and body used to the idea of having a good time creating a song, and over time youll like it more and more, and it wont be this daunting thing.
I meanx you can always revise something if you dont like it.
And you can always throw it away as well.
You are the ultimate master of your creation, and what you say, that goes.
Mate this was terrible
This is horrible.
Damn this applied to much more than songwriting for me LOL
Honestly man, I don’t like my own songs. I write pretty frequently and they just aren’t in line with my taste. I really dig modern jazz writers, and bebop era writers too. I can write a tune that sounds like every other tune, but not one that I really feel is special. Could care less if someone else likes it, really just trying to impress myself (as selfish as that sounds it’s true) I don’t fear their judgment, I fear my own.
But I will tell you, I went and wrote a song in the middle of this video and it wasn’t terrible, good lyrics, a bit of a boring progression and melody. May repurpose them for another song later
Thank you! That's a great video and this advices helped me a lot. But i can't download a PDF file from a site in the description 🙁 there's no any link to do it
writing for your own joy is best, art for your own enjoyment is great, but if you are disappointed with your results then listen to yourself and get good enough to feel good about your results, listen to your self and follow that I guess, learning is a necessity once you start feeling like what you do isnt satisfactory for your own enjoyment. John mayer is pretty accurate, so If he is right then we all have alot of work to do before even thinking about inspiration.
Awesome stuff
Hey can u make video how to sing like ian curtis? I want combine kurt scream for chorus for my song (probally) with soft calm ian voice for verse
Singing is the most difficult element of the process.
Hey Jim
Really great advice! When I coach people in content creation I tell them the same thing!
And just thought:
Man you are 47 now and never tried to write a song. Maybe I should take the challenge and write 47 songs in 47 days 😉
Hmmmhmhmhmmmm
:).
No-one writes 'stairway' or 'hotel' as a first attempt, a good way of getting past the 'don't want to get laughed at' barrier is purposely writing funny songs! Jack Black is a master of this. Blackie Lawless writes with just one guitar, no mic and an old one track cassette recorder he has used since the 80's… If the idea works well stripped down then the rest follows easily.
Too many kids in their pro tools studios now so busy on the instrumentation and mix but overlooking the real focus which is the song.
My man, you are not just a vocal coach, you are a life coach. Real and Rockin
