What’s up everyone, it’s Friedemann Findeisen from Holistic Songwriting. Welcome to the Artists Series where we take a close look at some of the biggest rock artists in the world to see how they make us feel a certain way. I’m happy to say that today we’re looking at one of my favorite bands, the Deftones. And I must admit it was difficult writing this episode as there are so many songs I want to discuss, so many interesting things that this band does. But I’ve tried to reign myself in and make this a great episode regardless whether you’re a fan or not.

  1. All this time, I thought Chino was shaping his melodies by writing notes on slips of paper, pouring all the slips into a jar, then reaching-in and selecting them randomly, like a lottery

  2. The most boring band I've ever heard. Even the examples the author gives sound the same. This music has no direction, it just hangs in the air; how is it any different than if I just put some drones together in an ableton and added some slick drum groove? No it's not different at all. I only have a few of their songs, and those are the songs that are somehow coordinately different from the rest (but oooh no, not Chino's moans, where without that shit), because the rest of the band sounds exactly the same and uninteresting, can't awaken any feelings with music that hums the same thing endlessly. "Radio Music for Meditation 24/7" sends its regards.

  3. i think chis bass playing has a big part in the sexual vibe in the band as well, example being the bass in change in the house of flies

  4. Wow, I am the same as a drummer.. I really refuse to learn double kick that well, and I think it sounds like shit usually. In metal bands i've been in, it's kinda annoyed the other members that I won't.

  5. I remember hearing a rumor that The Smashing Pumpkins gave a song to the Deftones to record that they didn't use, with the stipulation that they don't confirm or give credit to SP or billy. Anyone else hear that before? I never really looked into it but I have some ideas.

  6. I remember seeing them playing Kimdracula and everyone being omg lol wtf. Underoath played slightly before and said deftones were the inspiration for the entire band, two stages so everything moved smoothly. Most of the performances I saw that weekend were the best I've ever seen.

  7. i love your video, the sound of deftones it's incomparable, no one have that sound, sexy and dreamy, i would the best of me to get that on my voice and music <3

  8. Thoroughly enjoyed this video not sure how I missed it back when you posted it! I love how you pointed out nearly all my favorite little moments in most of these Deftones songs. Especially that drum thing Abe does at the end of 'Change', I'm a total sucker for those nuances in their music. Awesome video, awesome band!

  9. I'm interested into how their more recent work fits into all this, especially Ohms. Chino's melodies sound more subdued than ever to me these days but it results in some really unique stuff like "Error" and "Urantia".

  10. Rocket Skates is my favorite song off Diamond Eyes and Diamond Eyes is their 2nd best album next to obviously White Pony. Their latest album Ohms is up there too. They just keep evolving and changing over the years but at the same time always sounding like Deftones

  11. Fuck. I'd most certainly drown in a lifetime of debt to take a collegiate major in the fucking DEFTONES!!… willingly, and graciously lol
    Could you imagine?
    Publishing a thesis titled
    'Around the Fur'
    Hahahahaha
    Good shit
